How We Share the Planet
April 29 – May 3
We begin our new planner this week, How We Share the Planet. This planner is an inquiry into rights and responsibilities in the struggle to share finite resources with other people and with other living things. The central idea is “The Ocean is earth’s life support system”. We will begin the planner Wednesday and continue until the end of the school year.
Activities
We will be celebrating Day of the child, this has become an annual event at Mark Twain because I believe that children are the most important people on earth, they are the future. I found an article, written by Sergio Wheeler, which best explains this event. In Mexico, April 30 is Children's Day: el Día del Niño. Mother's Day and Father's Day are widely celebrated throughout the world. But Mexico is such an inclusive culture. Children's Day is always filled with activities, and children look forward to a holiday all their own with fun, gifts and special events. Many schools celebrate the day before and parents are invited. Of course, there are usually no classes on Children's Day itself, April 30, even though it is not an official holiday in the school calendar. On Children's Day, the main focus is on the children and making them feel special. In shopping malls all over Mexico, special events with clowns, magicians, music, shows and balloons take place.
Information
• Tuesday, April 30th –Day of the Child/Día de los niños. I will need several volunteers to help all day. We will be going through the different rotations and I need someone to help my students with the rotations because I will be teaching the dancing in my class to all students in Kindergarten. If you can help me PLEASE let me know. I would like at least 3 people for every 30 minute rotation starting at 8:15 Tuesday morning. We can have several people rotating through.
• Wednesday, May 1st – Student-Led Conferences. These will take place either in the morning or at the end of the day. You should have received a purple sheet in last Tuesday’s red folder for you to decide on a time. If you can’t make it during those times please let me know and we can arrange another time. This is not a conference with me but one with your child to go over what they have learned during each planner.
• Wednesday, May 8th – Kindergarten program in the cafeteria for the parents at 6:30. All students will need to wear a swim suit for their costume. All girls MUST wear a one piece swimsuit, no two pieces allowed and all boys will wear swim trunks with a tee shirt. All students can wear flip flops, sandals or swim shoes for the program. Any questions please see me.
• Friday, May 10th – Fieldtrip to Moody Gardens. All students must bring a sack lunch with everything disposable. All parents that signed up to go with us will need to car pool. We will not have much room on our bus. I have talked to the ones that need to ride with us.
